Chaos as 'Mosquitoes Flying to Germany on Planes' Lead to Two Deaths
Frankfurt Airport in Germany is in turmoil after two employees died from malaria last week.
According to BBC International on Tuesday (1/9/2026), this rare outbreak initially caused six employees to contract a serious infection. The question remains: how could this happen?
According to German public health officials, the incident occurred because mosquitoes (which act as disease vectors) boarded a plane and arrived at Germany’s busiest airport. This triggered the outbreak, which was first detected last July.
“Traps have been installed at the airport, and any mosquitoes caught will be analysed in a laboratory to determine their species and origin,” said an airport spokesperson.
“We have provided comprehensive information to all employees and urged them to consult a doctor if they experience any symptoms,” they added.
As reported by BBC International, the six airport workers infected with malaria were predominantly male, despite working in different roles and locations.
“Authorities are currently analysing blood samples to determine whether they were infected by a single mosquito or six different mosquitoes,” officials stated.
The announcement regarding the two deaths arrived last Wednesday. Public health officials in Frankfurt sent letters to various relevant media outlets regarding the matter.
“For the residents of Frankfurt, the risk is considered very, very low. This disease is not transmitted from person to person, but is always transmitted via mosquitoes,” the letter added.
The Robert Koch Institute, a German federal government agency and research institute for disease control and public health, previously stated that malaria cases in Germany almost exclusively affect long-distance travellers infected in malaria-endemic regions. Malaria transmission within a German airport is a rare occurrence.
“A lack of travel history can lead to delayed diagnosis. Delayed diagnosis increases the risk of the disease becoming severe,” the institute noted in its epidemiological bulletin.
Previously, the last case of malaria at an airport occurred in 2023, also at Frankfurt Airport. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), malaria is a disease spread through the bites of certain types of mosquitoes, specifically female Anopheles, in humans and is most commonly found in tropical countries.
While the infection can be prevented and cured, symptoms can vary from mild to life-threatening.
