Change of Engineering Study Programmes to 'Rekayasa' Aimed at Aligning with International Terminology
The Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the DPR, Lalu Hadrian Irfani, believes that changing the nomenclature of ‘Teknik’ (Engineering) study programmes to ‘Rekayasa’ (Engineering/Reengineering) in all Indonesian universities is a form of alignment with the international terminology of ‘engineering’. This change in nomenclature was established by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 96/B/KPT/202<0xA0>25 regarding the Names of Study Programmes in Academic and Professional Education.
“The change in nomenclature from Teknik to Rekayasa is a positive step to align the terms we use with international terminology, namely engineering. This is important so that Indonesian graduates can adapt more easily and possess competitiveness at a global level,” Lalu stated in his remarks, as reported on Monday (18/5/2026).
In addition, he also encouraged the improvement of the quality of higher education within these Teknik or Rekayasa study programmes. “The most important thing is not merely the change in name, but how universities continue to improve the quality of Engineering or Rekayasa education to be able to produce innovations that are beneficial to society and national development. Therefore, research and innovation must continue to advance,” said Lalu.
“The government must be present to support the development of research, innovation, and the works of the nation’s youth from campuses. In doing so, Engineering or Rekayasa education will truly become the driving force for the progress of industry, technology, and national independence,” added Lalu.
The change was signed by the Director General of Higher Education, Khairul Munadi, on 9 September 2025.
