Changan Plans to Bring Hybrid Technology to Indonesia
Chongqing - Changan Indonesia has begun showing signals of interest in expanding its product portfolio in the Indonesian automotive market. Not only focusing on pure electric vehicles (Battery Electric Vehicles/BEV), this Chinese manufacturer is also considering the potential of hybrid technology as one of the options for Indonesian consumers.
This technology diversification strategy is being pursued amid rising market interest in electrified vehicles that offer better fuel efficiency and performance. However, Changan does not want to rush in determining its steps.
“It’s indeed on our radar; we’re evaluating it. If you look at the models, they’re fine, but it all comes back to the price,” said Setiawan to reporters when met in Chongqing, China, on Sunday (19/4/2026).
Setiawan realises that the main challenge in marketing electrified vehicles in Indonesia does not only lie in the sophistication of the technology, but also in price competitiveness. With many global automotive brands already established in the hybrid segment ahead of them, Changan must ensure that the products it introduces have competitive economic value.
“If we want to introduce (hybrids), we have to know the calculations first, whether it can compete in the Indonesian market. The Indonesian market is an extraordinary one. It’s not that big, but there are an extraordinary number of players,” said Setiawan.
Furthermore, Setiawan emphasised that the final decision regarding the hybrid product line is still awaiting the results of in-depth studies. The company is striving to ensure that every new model launch, whether BEV or hybrid, has thorough planning to enable long-term sustainability.
“So, if we want to introduce something, the plan has to be solid. So, yes, it’s on the radar. But whether it will be introduced or not, when, well, we’ll see first, depending on the calculations,” he said.
It is known that Changan has Blue Core HEV technology. This technology was introduced globally on 30 March 2026.
