Changan Opens Pre-Orders for Deepal S05 SUV in Indonesia

Chinese automotive brand Changan has officially opened pre-orders for its latest electrified SUV in the Indonesian market, the Deepal S05. The model is available not only as a pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) but also with range extended electric vehicle (REEV) technology, which is claimed to be a first for Indonesia. The REEV technology is said to provide a solution for consumers who desire the full sensation of driving an electric car without worrying about the limitations of charging infrastructure during long journeys. The Deepal S05 REEV is equipped with a 27.28 kWh battery and a 1,500cc petrol engine, enabling it to travel more than 1,100 km. Meanwhile, the BEV variant features a 68.8 kWh battery with a range of up to 470 km based on NEDC calculations. Changan Indonesia CEO Setiawan Surya stated that the presence of two variants with different technologies reflects the company’s commitment to delivering diverse electrification solutions relevant to the needs of Indonesian consumers. The BEV variant operates like a standard pure electric vehicle, while the REEV variant combines a pure electric drive system with an internal combustion engine (ICE). Unlike a hybrid car, the petrol engine in the REEV does not drive the wheels but functions specifically as a generator to charge the battery. In terms of performance, the REEV model is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor producing a maximum output of 160 kW and 320 Nm of torque. In electric vehicle (EV) mode, this vehicle can travel up to 170 km, allowing most daily mobility needs to be met without activating the petrol engine. The BEV variant produces a maximum output of 200 kW and 290 Nm of torque. Despite employing different technological approaches, both the Deepal S05 and Deepal S05 REEV share the same exterior and interior design. The Deepal S05 adopts a ‘Symbiotic Aesthetics’ design philosophy and has received the Germany iF Design Award 2025. The exterior combines modern and functional elements, with a front inspired by spacecraft wings and sides featuring frameless doors and electric door handles to enhance the premium feel. Inside the cabin, the vehicle is equipped with a 15.4-inch central control screen featuring ‘sunflower screen’ technology that can swivel up to 15 degrees towards the driver or front passenger. For driving comfort, the front passenger seat includes heating, ventilation, a leg rest, and a memory seat function. Although the official price has not been announced, Changan estimates prices will start from around Rp 500 million per unit.
