Jakarta — Chinese automaker Changan Auto has introduced a new hybrid platform called Blue Core Super Engine, targeting 70 million global consumers annually who still use internal combustion engines.

According to CarNewChina on 12 March local time, the Chinese state-owned company invested 2 billion yuan (approximately Rp4.9 trillion) to build a specialised laboratory for developing the Blue Core Super Engine architecture.

The company aims for the hybrid platform to achieve fuel consumption of 2.98 litres per 100 kilometres in urban environments, according to IT-home.

The Blue Core Super Engine platform is the result of a six-year development cycle involving 1,000 engineers and 163 technological breakthroughs in powertrain hardware and software.

The latest platform version uses an integrated “oil and electricity” approach that prioritises electric motor drive over the engine. To ensure durability over the long term, the system underwent 2 million kilometres of road testing in various global conditions across 70 different road surfaces.

Changan set fuel consumption of 2.98 litres/100 kilometres in urban areas as the primary performance target. With efficiency optimisation at low speeds, the platform is designed to address fuel wastage typically occurring in stop-and-go traffic conditions.

The powertrain is tuned to produce high instant torque and lower noise levels, delivering a driving experience similar to a purely electric vehicle.

The Blue Core system enters a market already occupied by other hybrid technologies such as BYD’s DM-i 5.0 and Geely’s NordThor (Leishen) EM-i, both claiming fuel consumption as low as 2.62 litres/100 kilometres.

Meanwhile, internal development of hybrid transmission systems and power electronics can reduce Changan’s reliance on third-party suppliers, such as Aisin for high-efficiency gearboxes.
