Challenges and Opportunities of Digitalisation in Indonesia's Taxation System
Digitalisation has become a crucial part of transforming public services in Indonesia, including in the field of taxation. The government, through the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP), continues to develop a technology-based tax administration system to improve efficiency, transparency, and ease of service for taxpayers. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to aligning tax services with the developments of the digital era.
Behind these various conveniences, the digitalisation process certainly faces a number of challenges. For example, there is a digital literacy gap among the public and business actors, especially for taxpayers who are not yet accustomed to using technology-based services. In addition, data security and the process of adapting to new systems are factors that need continuous attention so that the implementation of digitalisation runs optimally and provides a good experience for taxpayers.
Thus, the opportunities offered by the digitalisation of the taxation system are substantial. The use of technology helps administrative processes become faster, reduces the use of physical documents, and facilitates access to services anytime and anywhere. For the government, a digital system can also support more integrated tax data management, thereby helping to improve service quality while strengthening data-based oversight more effectively.
The success of tax system digitalisation depends not only on technology but also on collaboration between the government, business actors, academics, and the public. Education regarding the use of digital services needs to be continuously improved so that all levels of society can adapt to the changes taking place. On the other hand, strengthening cybersecurity and improving service quality are important aspects to maintain public trust in the digital taxation system.
This strategic step aims to realise a modern, efficient, and service-oriented tax administration. Although various challenges remain in its implementation, the resulting opportunities are far greater if supported by continuous innovation, improved digital literacy, and the active participation of all stakeholders. Thus, the digital transformation in the taxation sector can become one of the important foundations in supporting better governance and sustainable economic development in Indonesia.
