The brutal and fatal attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran on Saturday, 28 February, shocked the world.

The United States and Israeli attacks on Iran represent brutal actions that once again damage the international order and potentially trigger uncontrollable global conflict, whilst creating grounds for the resurgence of radicalism and extremism.

This statement was made by the Chairman of PBNU, KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, in response to the American and Israeli attacks on Iran since Saturday, 27 February. “I strongly condemn this,” stated Gus Yahya in a press release received on Monday, 2 March.

He also expressed deep condolences over the death of Imam Ali Khamenei as a result of these attacks and called upon all Muslims and the international community to pray for the Iranian nation, hoping it remains resilient and is given strength to navigate this crisis safely.

However, in the press release Gus Yahya also expressed regret over Iran’s actions in attacking various countries without acceptable justification, which has consequentially driven conflict escalation and further complicated resolution efforts. “We all understand that this was anger targeting suspected locations of American forces, but regardless, these attacks will only worsen the situation,” he explained.

PBNU, according to Gus Yahya, calls upon the international community to consolidate efforts to restore the consensus of international order with the United Nations as its structural manifestation so that the UN can effectively perform its function as guardian of international order.

“We also encourage the Indonesian Government to take an active role in pursuing conflict de-escalation towards a peaceful and dignified resolution. This is the mandate of our constitution.”

Gus Yahya expects the Indonesian Government to utilise its presence and position within the Board of Peace to press the US, Israel, and other actors involved to halt violence and pursue the path of peace.
