In a significant meeting held in Beijing last Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump agreed on a new vision to build a more constructive and stable China-US relationship. This framework is expected to serve as a strategic guide for bilateral relations over the next three years and beyond.

During discussions lasting over two hours at the Great Hall of the People, Xi expressed his desire to work with Trump to steer the direction of China-US relations, aiming for 2026 to be a historic moment that opens a new chapter in bilateral ties. Xi noted that the China-US relationship is one of the most important bilateral connections amidst a global landscape of change and uncertainty, asserting that both nations benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation.

Explaining the new vision, Xi stated that the concept of ‘constructive and strategic stability’ must be realised through cooperation, healthy stability with moderate competition, sustainable stability through controlled management of differences, and long-term stability that upholds peace. He emphasised that these goals must be achieved through concrete steps from both parties rather than mere slogans.

Under the guidance of head-of-state diplomacy, the relationship has remained stable. Xi highlighted the crucial role of both leaders in navigating complex global dynamics. Over the past year, Xi and Trump have maintained intensive communication, including telephone conversations and a meeting in Busan, South Korea, last October.

The positive impact of this diplomacy is also evident in economic and trade relations. Since 2025, China-US economic and trade teams have held several consultative meetings, reaching numerous positive understandings. Xi remarked that the economic relationship is mutually beneficial, stating, “When differences and frictions arise, equal consultation is the only appropriate choice.”

Trump expressed similar views, noting that US-China cooperation can produce significant positive outcomes for both nations and the world. Professor Wang Yiwei of Renmin University of China told CGTN that the most important outcome of the meeting was the birth of this new bilateral vision.

Investment and business interests also remain robust. More than a dozen US corporate leaders accompanied Trump, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, reflecting US corporate confidence in the Chinese market. The economic benefits are tangible; for instance, approximately 40% of cargo activity at the Port of Los Angeles is directly linked to trade with China.

Furthermore, bilateral investment opportunities continue to expand. Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai produced its fourth million vehicle in December 2025, with 95% of components sourced from local Chinese suppliers. The factory has established a ‘four-hour circle’ supply chain in the Yangtze River Delta involving over 400 Chinese tier-one suppliers.

A recent report from the American Chamber of Commerce in China indicates that 52% of US companies in China are expected to turn a profit in 2025, an increase of six percentage points from the previous year. More than half of the surveyed companies still rank China as one of their top three global investment destinations.

Meeting with US entrepreneurs, Xi stated that China will continue to open wider market access and welcomes increased mutually beneficial cooperation. As China enters its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) and the US approaches its 250th anniversary, both nations will also host major economic summits, including APEC and the G20. Both leaders expressed mutual support for these agendas, which are vital to global economic governance and world growth. “The success of one party is an opportunity for the other, and a stable bilateral relationship will benefit the world,” Xi concluded.
