JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Jakarta Provincial Government has temporarily suspended the implementation of the Car Free Day (CFD) on Jalan HR Rasuna Said on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
The CFD will resume in June 2026.
Head of the Jakarta Transportation Department, Syafrin Liputo, said that the CFD on Rasuna Said will resume after a number of on-site evaluations have been followed up.
“The CFD on Jalan HR Rasuna Said provides an alternative space for sports and public space for the community. The results of air quality measurements around the location during the CFD also showed better results compared to working days,” said Syafrin in Jakarta, Saturday (May 16, 2026).
The CFD on Rasuna Said also helped reduce the number of visitors to the Sudirman-Thamrin area.
Based on data from the Jakarta Transportation Department, the number of visitors to the provincial-level CFD on the Jalan Jenderal Sudirman-MH Thamrin corridor decreased from 29,256 people on May 3, 2026, to 13,759 people on May 10, 2026, or a decrease of around 52.97 percent.
“This shows that the CFD on HR Rasuna Said can disperse the concentration of people in Sudirman-Thamrin so that community activities are more spread out,” said Syafrin.
However, the implementation of the CFD on May 10 still left a number of evaluation notes, including the lack of turning points on the east and west sides of the corridor, the lack of Transjakarta lane dividers, and the presence of illegal parking in a number of locations.
The Jakarta Transportation Department also noted that there were still differences in road levels after the dismantling of the monorail pillars and the accumulation of community activities in the Plaza Festival area, causing runners and cyclists to have to use the Transjakarta bus lanes.
Syafrin ensured that all of these obstacles would be immediately followed up with a cross-agency CFD task force.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is also preparing a legal basis for the implementation of the CFD on Jalan HR Rasuna Said.
“Improvements to supporting facilities and the arrangement of community activities will be carried out so that the implementation of the CFD on Rasuna Said is safer, more comfortable and more organised,” said Syafrin.
The CFD on Jalan HR Rasuna Said is planned to resume in June 2026, every Sunday, from 05.30-09.00 WIB.
The Jakarta Provincial Government hopes that the presence of the new CFD corridor will expand public access to public spaces for sports and interaction in the city centre.
