Palu (ANTARA) - The Government of Central Sulawesi Province is forging cooperation with Hainan Province, China, to strengthen investment in the tropical agriculture sector, green minerals, trade, investment, industrial estates, and education.

Central Sulawesi and Hainan are both located in tropical regions and share similar geographic characteristics. This provides a major advantage for building mutually beneficial cooperation in tropical agriculture, green minerals, trade, investment, industrial zones, and education, said Governor Anwar Hafid of Central Sulawesi in a written statement from Palu, on Friday.

Governor Anwar Hafid met with Liu Xiaoming, Governor of Hainan Province, in Haikou, China, to strengthen cooperative ties between the two regions, on Wednesday (20/5).

During the meeting, Governor Anwar Hafid stressed that Central Sulawesi is ready to open up wider international cooperation space to accelerate regional development and improve the welfare of the people.

He also emphasised the importance of strengthening sustainable cooperation mechanisms between the two regions, so that the various potentials can be realised into real programmes that have a direct impact on the people.

The cooperation discussed includes strengthening the tropical agriculture sector, marine fisheries, seed industry, cultivation technology, trade and investment, and the development of logistics, cold chains, and cross-regional export-import connectivity.

Both parties also encouraged the development of joint production and distribution platforms to strengthen the regional supply chain.

In addition, Hainan and Central Sulawesi agreed to broaden collaboration in education, research, and human resources development, including plans to build a scientific cooperation platform and talent training through the Tropical Region University Alliance.

Meanwhile, Governor Liu Xiaoming expressed appreciation for Governor Anwar Hafid’s visit along with the Sulawesi Tengah provincial government delegation.

He also outlined developments in the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port, which is now one of the new growth engines for the region’s economy in Asia.

Liu Xiaoming emphasised that China and Indonesia are strategic partners with close and mutually beneficial ties.

According to him, Central Sulawesi has great potential, particularly in agriculture, fisheries, and tropical resources, which aligns closely with Hainan Province’s development cooperation direction.

“The cooperation between Hainan and Central Sulawesi is highly compatible and promising. We hope that the two regions can jointly seize opportunities in the development of free-trade zones and the implementation of the RCEP to broaden collaboration in various strategic areas,” he said.
