PALU - The Provincial Government of Central Sulawesi (Pemprov Sulteng) and the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) have agreed to focus on building a national durian ecosystem for long-term export of the commodity.

‘Whilst export activities are ongoing, local and central governments must ensure the durian ecosystem grows healthily from upstream to downstream to strengthen community economy and create widespread employment opportunities,’ said Central Sulawesi Governor Anwar Hafid during a working visit from Barantin Chief Abdul Kadir Karding in Palu on Tuesday.

He noted that durian is now a highly promising new economic strength for the region, urging local authorities not to rush into burdening businesses with various levies but instead focus on building a healthy and sustainable industrial ecosystem.

‘Let the ecosystem grow well from upstream to downstream. The region is already greatly benefiting as communities are employed in packing houses. This is part of helping the government reduce poverty and create new jobs,’ he added.

‘If one packing house can employ around 200 workers, it is highly advantageous for the region. The government must see this as a major economic opportunity,’ Anwar said.

Meanwhile, Parigi Moutong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Chairman Faradiba Zaenong highlighted key points regarding strengthening durian industry governance in Central Sulawesi.

Kadin urged the government to swiftly establish clear regulations to create a healthy and well-structured durian ecosystem, from farmers, UMKM (micro, small and medium enterprises), to packing houses owned by local or foreign entrepreneurs.
