Central Papua Provincial Government Partners with High Prosecutor's Office to Ensure Accountable Development

The Central Papua Provincial Government is strengthening its collaboration with the Papua High Prosecutor’s Office to achieve more accountable and targeted development within the region.

Speaking in Nabire on Monday, the Governor of Central Papua, Meki Nawipa, stated that this cooperation is a strategic step to ensure all development programmes are carried out in accordance with regulations and provide tangible benefits to the community. “This collaboration is essential so that every policy and programme implemented by the government has legal certainty and does not lead to complications in the future,” he said.

As a newly established province, Central Papua faces significant development challenges, particularly regarding geographical conditions, basic services, connectivity, education, health, and the strengthening of the local economy. The Governor explained that the regional government requires legal assistance from the design phase through to the execution of development programmes to minimise the potential for irregularities.

Several ongoing priority programmes include free education, the construction of boarding-school-style schools, the development of a provincial hospital, and the strengthening of cooperatives and MSMEs. “To ensure all programmes run with good governance and orderly administration, legal assistance from the Papua High Prosecutor’s Office is crucial,” he added.

The Civil Society Division (Datun) holds the authority to provide assistance, considerations, and other legal actions to the government to safeguard and restore state finances or assets. This synergy also serves as a means to strengthen the prevention of potential regional budget misappropriation. “This legal assistance is also part of our prevention efforts to ensure no deviations occur during the implementation of development programmes,” he said.

He further noted that the synergy between the regional government and the prosecutor’s office is expected to increase public trust while strengthening clean and responsible governance in Central Papua.
