The Central Lombok Regency Government (Pemkab), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has halted operations at 25 franchise supermarket outlets for violating local regulations. Of the total modern retail outlets closed, 18 belong to Alfamart and the other 7 to Indomaret, located less than 1 kilometre (km) from traditional markets.

Head of the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) of Central Lombok, Zaenal Mustakim, stated that the closures were carried out based on the results of a cross-Organisational Device of the Region (OPD) study, which was mandated to implement Local Regulation (Perda) No. 7 of 2021 on the Arrangement and Development of People’s Markets, Shopping Centres, and Supermarkets.

“So that is the result of the study team from across OPDs. Consisting of the Licensing Service, Trade, Civil Service Police, and Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR). They have been considering and studying Perda 7 of 2021. The conclusion is that the Local Government must enforce that Perda,” said Mustakim to detikBali on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

According to Mustakim, the closed stores are spread across 10 sub-districts in Central Lombok. The closures have been effective since 11 May 2026.

“Closed from yesterday for the next month. We are giving them space to carry out the closure independently first, while we see if there will be any defence or not. But in the end, they will still be permanently closed,” he emphasised.

Protecting Small Traders

Separately, Secretary of the Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Agency (DPMPTSP) of Central Lombok, Helmi Qazwaini, said the closures are a step by the local government to protect small traders in traditional markets.

“This arrangement of modern retail is aimed at protecting and safeguarding small businesses, UMKM, and traders in the community,” said Helmi.

According to him, the presence of modern retail too close to traditional markets is feared to kill off small traders’ and UMKM’s businesses. On the other hand, the establishment of Alfamart and Indomaret is seen as increasingly massive, even reaching remote villages.

“It is feared that the existence of such massive modern retail in remote rural areas will cause the people’s economy to erode. Especially, small kiosks will be eroded and close due to losing competition with this modern retail,” he added.
