Central Java sets official birthday

SEMARANG: Central Java Governor Mardiyanto announced earlier this
week that Aug. 15, 1950, was the province's official date of
birth. The date was decided following a long and careful
discussion involving government officials, experts, public
figures and a special committee of the provincial legislative
council.

During the ceremony that marked the launch of the birth date
on Tuesday, Mardiyanto also awarded winners of the logo design
competition for the province's 54th anniversary. Andi Sudarto of
Semarang won first prize, while Sigit Maryuwanto of Sleman,
Yogyakarta, was runner-up.

Under Law No. 10/1950, the province has the authority to
decide its territorial borders, the its governmental structure
and the name of its capital. -- JP
