Central Java Provincial Secretary Sumarno has admitted to frequently running and cycling to his office. His statement responds to Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi’s desire for civil servants (ASN) in Central Java to run or cycle to work as part of efforts to save fuel consumption.

“If I already do. I already run too,” Sumarno said when asked whether the policy of cycling to the office for ASN in Central Java has been implemented, on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

He stated that the distance from his official residence to the office is only three kilometres. “If from my official residence on Wahidin Street, it’s only three kilometres. But I still do it, because it’s part of exercise, I cycle 40 kilometres round trip before going to the office. Run 10 kilometres,” he said.

Therefore, Sumarno hopes that ASN whose route from home to office is not extreme can cycle. “The hope is that those without steep hills can cycle,” he stated.

According to Sumarno, the cycling to office policy is almost the same as when ASN were prohibited from bringing motorised vehicles. “Yesterday I also conveyed to the Governor, perhaps specifically on Fridays no motorised vehicles to the office. This is also to use public transport. That can also reduce fuel consumption,” said Sumarno.

He revealed that in the Ministry of Home Affairs circular (SE) on saving energy or fuel consumption, ASN in the regions are also urged to use transport with minimal fossil fuels. “Electric vehicles, bicycles, walking, running, that’s one of the things outlined in the Ministry of Home Affairs circular,” he said.

Previously, Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi stated that he is studying a policy for ASN, including regents and mayors in Central Java, to cycle to the office. This is in the context of saving energy consumption.

Luthfi revealed that the Central Java Provincial Government is still awaiting a circular from the central government regarding the technical implementation of energy savings. Even though there is no directive from the central government yet, he admitted to studying a policy for ASN, including regents and mayors in Central Java, to cycle to the office.

“We have calculated it, if necessary, tomorrow on a certain day all ASN will cycle with all regents and mayors. So to the office by bicycle,” he said on Monday (30/3/2026).

However, Luthfi admitted he does not yet have a picture of the technical implementation of the policy, including the scheduling for its application. “We’ll calculate it later,” he said when asked whether the ASN cycling regulation would be applied every day.

He added that besides cycling, another option for saving energy consumption is to utilise public transport. “So we will do socialisation, we will study it, once the government announces it, Central Java Province is ready,” said Luthfi.

Luthfi admitted he does not yet have a target for energy savings in the scope of the Central Java Provincial Government. “We’re still calculating it together. Besides bicycles, if necessary, run there and back,” he said.

“Work-from-home is also still being studied. Which days are still being studied,” Luthfi added.
