Central Java Regional Police Investigate Deepfake Pornography Case Involving Seven University Students

The Central Java Regional Police (Polda Jateng) are investigating a case involving the creation of deepfake pornographic photos and videos, with seven university students in Semarang and Surakarta identified as potential victims. One victim, identified as E, has already been questioned as a witness.

Central Java Regional Police Head of Public Relations, Kombes Pol Artanto, confirmed that investigators from the Cyber Crime Directorate have conducted examinations of E. “Investigators have also shared the progress of the initial investigation results,” he stated during an interview on Tuesday (28/07/2026).

However, Artanto noted that the Cyber Crime Directorate has not yet reached a conclusion regarding the suspected perpetrator. “The perpetrator contacted the victims via private message, but the name used is unknown or anonymous. The investigation must focus on identifying who sent the deepfake pornographic content. Therefore, the case remains broad due to the anonymity involved,” he explained.

When asked to confirm whether there are indeed seven suspected victims whose faces were edited into deepfake pornographic content, Artanto stated he could not yet provide certainty. “Officers have received information or statements from victims that others have been subjected to the same treatment,” he said.

“Regarding the total number of victims, we do not know yet. What is currently being monitored is that two victims are being traced by investigators,” Artanto added.
