The Yogyakarta City Police (Polresta Jogja) have involved the forensic laboratory (Labfor) team from the Central Java Regional Police to uncover the cause of the fire at the Hamzah Batik Malioboro store in Gondomanan, Yogyakarta, which occurred in the early hours of Monday (28/9).

Acting Head of Public Relations for Polresta Jogja, Iptu Dani Hasan, explained that several samples of debris from the fire are currently being examined in the forensic laboratory.

“On Monday, 2_September 2026, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Unit and Inafis of Polresta Jogja, together with the forensic laboratory team from the Central Java Regional Police, conducted a crime scene investigation,” Dani explained when contacted by journalists on Wednesday (30/9/2026).

Dani added that the authorities are continuing to examine samples taken from the scene to ascertain the cause of the fire. “Several samples of items or objects were taken from the location for forensic laboratory testing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Dani stated.

Regarding the estimated total losses resulting from the fire, Dani noted that the calculation is still being conducted by the Hamzah Batik management. “The total loss is still being documented by the batik shop owners,” he said.

It was reported that the Hamzah Batik Malioboro store, located in Ngupasan, Gondomanan, Yogyakarta, was engulfed by flames in the early hours of Monday (28/9). The fire is suspected to have originated from the kitchen area on the third floor of the building.

Iptu Dani Hasan explained that the fire is believed to have occurred around 1:30 AM WIB. “A witness and their friend, who were repairing a bathroom on the third floor, heard the sound of something bursting and burning,” Dani said on Monday (28/9).

“The witness checked and saw flames in the kitchen area on the third floor. Subsequently, the witness informed the security guard on duty, who then used a fire extinguisher to attempt to extinguish the flames,” he continued.

However, the security guard’s actions were unable to contain the blaze. As the fire grew larger, the guard reported the incident to the Yogyakarta City Fire and Rescue Service (Damkarmat) and the Gondomanan Police Sector.

“Shortly after, units from the Yogyakarta City Fire Department, Gondomanan Police, and medical teams from PSC 119 Yogyakarta arrived at the scene. The firefighting process involved 12 fire engines, one water cannon unit from Polresta Jogja, and one fire truck from the TNI,” Dani explained.

The fire was successfully extinguished just before dawn. Dani stated that while the cause of the fire is still being investigated by the police, he confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident.

“At 04:45 AM WIB, the fire was successfully extinguished, followed by the cooling process at the scene,” he concluded.
