Central Java Records 1,704 New HIV Cases in 2026, LSL Group Dominates

A total of 1,704 new Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases have been detected in Central Java throughout 2026. Over the past five years, new infections have been predominantly found among men who have sex with men (LSL).

Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi has described the situation as a serious concern and plans to instruct relevant regional apparatus organisations (OPD) to implement early prevention measures. He stated that this step is part of implementing regulations set by the central government, specifically referencing Presidential Regulation Number 111 of 2025, which defines non-military threats as activities that can endanger state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national safety, including those related to ideology, politics, economy, social and cultural aspects, technology, public safety, and legislation concerning groups such as LGBT.

Head of the Central Java Provincial Health Office, Zulfachmi, explained that the pattern of HIV transmission in the region over the last five years has been dominated by the LSL group. He noted that the frequency of sexual contact is a key factor influencing the high rate of transmission within this group, as more frequent contact can cause irritation that facilitates the virus’s entry.

According to data up to 30 April 2026, the 1,704 new HIV cases were most prevalent in the 25–29 age group with 265 cases, followed by the 30–34 age group with 244 cases, and the 20–24 age group with 235 cases. Other significant age groups included 35–39 years (194 cases), 40–44 years (180 cases), and 45–49 years (152 cases). Cases were also recorded among older age brackets, with 125 cases in the 50–54 group and 123 cases among those over 60. Infections among younger individuals included 81 cases in the 15–19 age group, 13 cases in children aged 0–4, and five cases each in the 5–9 and 10–14 age groups.

Geographically, Semarang city recorded the highest number of new HIV cases in 2026 with 229, followed by Banyumas with 107 cases and Pati with 98 cases. The lowest numbers were reported in Temanggung with 20 cases, Magelang and Purworejo with 22 cases each, and Wonosobo with 24 cases.
