Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi has stated that his administration has prepared various requirements to welcome the arrival of mudik (homecoming) travellers. The preparations include infrastructure development and support for business operators in mudik destination areas.

“That is why we have prepared infrastructure, hotels, and even small and medium enterprises in strategic locations and mudik destination villages,” said Luthfi in a written statement on Monday, 16 March 2026.

Central Java is indeed one of the regions with the largest mudik destinations each year. In addition, the province serves as a main transit route for travellers from the Jabodetabek and West Java regions heading to East Java, and vice versa.

For this reason, Luthfi hopes that the movement of people during mudik will stimulate money circulation and economic activity in various districts across Central Java.

The administration has coordinated with district and municipal governments down to the village level to welcome the mudik travellers. He believes the mudik momentum should be leveraged as an opportunity to improve the economy of communities in the region.

“So the basic needs of mudik travellers are fulfilled, including travellers in certain places who are welcome to spend their pocket money in Central Java, particularly with small and medium enterprises,” he explained.

In addition to being a mudik destination, Central Java frequently serves as a rest point for travellers making long journeys. For this reason, Luthfi encouraged mudik travellers to take advantage of the various rest facilities available in the province.

“Please rest and sleep at the accommodation available in Central Java,” he added.

During the mudik and return traffic period this year, approximately 17 million people are estimated to enter and travel through Central Java. Some of them have their home villages in the province, whilst others are merely passing through to other areas such as East Java.

In the 2026 Lebaran Mudik programme, Central Java Provincial Government together with 35 districts/municipalities, regional state-owned enterprises, and various agencies also mobilised hundreds of bus convoys to facilitate people returning home.

A total of 348 bus convoys have been prepared. As many as 325 bus units departed from Jakarta with approximately 16,186 mudik travellers, whilst 23 other bus units departed from Bandung carrying 1,133 mudik travellers.

In addition to land transport, a free mudik programme is also available via train services. The plan is for train departures to be flagged off directly by the Central Java Governor on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, with a total capacity of approximately 1,288 seats.
