The Central Java Provincial Government is training treasurers of village and urban-ward Red-and-White Cooperatives (KDKMP) to strengthen their readiness and ensure they can operate effectively.

Central Java Regional Secretary Sumarno said in Semarang on Friday that the KDKMP programme was expected to be an instrument for driving economic activity with broader community participation.

He said resources allocated by the central government therefore needed to be managed optimally to ensure the programme’s success.

Measures include improving treasurers’ skills through training and certification, and strengthening institutional governance so that cooperatives can be run professionally and deliver tangible benefits to the public.

According to Sumarno, cooperative success depends not only on the availability of capital and infrastructure, but also on the quality of management, accountability and members’ understanding of cooperative principles.

“We must all support and contribute to the success of Red-and-White village and urban-ward cooperatives in Central Java. Strong cooperatives are expected to bring prosperity to the community,” he said.

He said he hoped the treasurer training and certification would help ensure cooperative management was orderly, transparent and accountable.

As a result, KDKMP should not merely exist as business entities, but also fulfil their role in driving the community’s economy.

Central Java Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Agency head Linda Widiastuti Ariningrum said the provincial training and competency certification programme was aimed at around 5,040 people, divided into 168 cohorts.

The programme has so far held 48 cohorts, and the provincial government aims to complete all training by the end of November 2026.

Improving treasurers’ skills is considered essential to ensuring that cooperative finances are managed in an orderly and professional manner.

Recording transactions, preparing financial statements and accounting for the use of funds are key to building members’ trust and ensuring the sustainability of cooperative businesses.

Ariningrum said KDKMP was expected to play a broader economic role, including supporting the distribution of goods needed by the public and creating opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to reach markets through cooperatives.

With good management, cooperatives are expected to strengthen distribution chains and serve as marketing partners for SMEs.
