Central Java Provincial Government Insures 10,000 Hectares of Rice Fields to Anticipate Crop Failure

Governor of Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi, explained that this scheme was introduced to ensure that farmers affected by drought-induced disasters are not trapped by online loans or moneylenders while attempting to recover their planting capital.

“In Central Java, we have prepared insurance for 10,000 hectares of land subject to crop failure or ‘puso’,” said Ahmad Luthfi in a written statement on Thursday (3/9/2026). “Jamkrida is ready to provide coverage should crop failure occur.”

Luthfi urged farmers experiencing crop failure to apply for the insurance. He reminded them not to fall into the trap of online loans (pinjol) or borrowing from moneylenders.

“If there is a crop failure, you must not borrow from moneylenders or online lenders. For crop failure, Jamkrida is available; the insurance is there,” he stated.

Additionally, the Central Java Provincial Department of Agriculture and Livestock has coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture to provide seeds for farmers. Assistance will be distributed through several schemes following reports and field verifications.

To manage drought in agricultural land, the Central Java Provincial Government has also prepared several mechanisms. These include the optimisation of tertiary irrigation in irrigated fields, as well as the use of pumping and piping irrigation systems for networks facing water scarcity.

These efforts are being undertaken to ensure water availability, reduce the risk of crop failure, and maintain harvest productivity.

In Central Java, there are recorded 242,826 hectares of rain-fed rice fields and 530,748 hectares of irrigated rice fields. Interventions for rain-fed fields involve pumping irrigation, while irrigated fields will be addressed through tertiary irrigation networks.

“We are also striving to protect and maintain farmers’ fields to prevent them from being converted to other uses,” said Livelihood.

Meanwhile, representatives of farmer groups in Pemalang Regency used a meeting with Governor Ahmad Luthfi to raise various issues. These ranged from the silting of rivers and irrigation channels to farm roads and the need for better quality rice seeds.

Regarding these matters, Ahmad Luthfi emphasised that the dredging of sediment in rivers and irrigation channels will be proposed in the 2027 budget. As for farm roads, they have become a priority and will be addressed immediately.

“Handling siltation also requires coordination with relevant parties, including regents and mayors,” he concluded.
