Semarang (ANTARA) - The Central Java Provincial Government continues to boost fish consumption levels among the public by encouraging the strengthening of the fresh fish distribution chain from coastal areas to the central regions.

“This is what we must mobilise, how fresh fish can enter the central regions of Central Java,” said the Central Java Regional Secretary, Sumarno, during the Socialisation of Presidential Regulation Number 74 of 2026 regarding the Movement to Popularise Fish Consumption (Gemarikan) at the Grhadika Bhakti Praja Building, Semarang, on Wednesday.

By strengthening the distribution chain of fresh fish from coastal areas to the central regions of Central Java, he said, it is hoped that the public will become more accustomed to consuming fresh fish.

According to him, the sub-optimal fish consumption in Central Java is not solely caused by issues of price or availability.

He assessed that strengthening the distribution chain is one of the keys to changing this habit.

He stated that the government needs to involve trading businesses so that fish from both catches and aquaculture in coastal areas can more easily reach the public in the central regions.

From a production perspective, he acknowledged that Central Java possesses great fishery potential, with aquaculture production estimated to be close to 500,000 tonnes, while catches are also around the 500,000-tonne mark.
