Central Java Police Foil Smuggling of 18 Black-Headed Hill Mynas from Papua
Semarang (ANTARA) - Central Java Police have uncovered the smuggling of 18 black-headed hill mynas, protected birds originating from Papua, which were brought into the province via Juwana Port in Pati Regency.
Director of Special Criminal Investigation at Central Java Police, Senior Commissioner Pol. Djoko Julianto, stated in Semarang on Monday that the foiling of the protected wildlife smuggling attempt using a vessel was the result of coordination with the Central Java Natural Resources Conservation Centre (BKSDA).
He said that three fishermen who transported the protected animals without approved breeding certificates from the BKSDA have been designated as suspects.
“The suspects purchased these protected birds in Manokwari, West Papua,” he said.
The birds, he continued, were intended to be resold at prices reaching Rp20 million per bird.
Investigators, he added, are still probing the whereabouts of the financier suspected of funding the suspects.
For their actions, the suspects are charged under Law No. 32 of 2024 on the Conservation of Living Natural Resources.
