Semarang (ANTARA) – Muhammadiyah Central Java is committed to overseeing the sustainability and success of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, ensuring it is managed in a progressive and equitable manner, with transparent governance.

Zakiyuddin Baidhawy, deputy chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Java, said in Semarang on Saturday that the MBG programme was, in essence, part of a strategic, long-term investment in human resource development.

He said its management should therefore be viewed from a civilisational perspective.

“Free meal programmes are not new internationally. Countries such as Finland and Germany began them decades ago,” he said.

He added that MBG should be regarded as a human development policy, rather than merely a food distribution scheme that risks generating more waste if it is not properly managed.

He said Muhammadiyah viewed the MBG programme through the theological values of Al-Ma’un Theology.

He added that involvement in and oversight of the programme were guided by the fulfilment of the principles of Maqasid al-Sharia, particularly the protection of life and the preservation of intellect.

In addition, the nutritious food served must meet two main requirements: it must be halal and tayyib. He also called for strict adherence to hygiene and sanitation standards, as well as food-safety protocols, to prevent cases of food poisoning.

He said MBG was also expected to promote economic justice. Procurement arrangements and programme management should provide fair opportunities for local small and medium-sized enterprises, farmers, fishers and livestock breeders in surrounding areas.

“MBG is an ecosystem that creates a multiplier effect in the local economy,” he said.
