Central Java High Prosecutor's Office Investigates Corruption in 'Smart Classroom' Programme Across 13 Regions

The Central Java High Prosecutor’s Office (Kejati) is investigating alleged corruption in the procurement of smart TVs as part of the ‘smart classroom’ programme across 13 regencies and cities in the province.

Ade Hermawan, Assistant for Special Crimes at the Central Java High Prosecutor’s Office, stated in Semarang on Wednesday that the 2024 project was funded by provincial assistance funds. He noted that there are suspicions of price ‘mark-ups’ regarding goods shipped from abroad.

He explained that the goods, which originated from China and were subsequently rebranded, are suspected of having their prices inflated by up to six times. He further detailed that the overseas goods were allegedly shipped in bulk before being rebranded and distributed, despite the programme requiring specific 84-inch smart TV specifications.

He explained that approximately 50 witnesses have been questioned by investigators, and the investigation has now entered the stage of calculating state losses. No suspects have been officially named in this case yet.

He added that the investigation into this corruption case could potentially lead to allegations of criminal acts committed by corporations.
