Central Java Governor: MTQ is about more than just winning

Semarang (ANTARA) - The Governor of Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi, emphasised that the essence of the 31st National Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ) goes far beyond merely becoming a champion.

“The participants’ performances should be optimised. It is far removed from any interests, and is more important than just being a winner,” he said in Semarang on Saturday night.

He made these remarks during the opening of the 31st National MTQ, which took place at the Simpang Lima Field in Semarang.

“I believe in our deepest hearts that all participants are champions before Allah SWT because they have read and practised the Al-Quran, which was officially opened tonight,” he said.

According to him, Central Java being selected as the host for the 31st National MTQ is a historic moment, echoing 47 years ago when the province hosted a similar event in 1979.

“Personally, I am grateful to be one of the witnesses to the implementation of the 31st National MTQ,” he said.

He stated that the National MTQ is not merely a competition for reading and memorising the Al-Quran, but carries the significance of a people’s festival that unites society across different religions and backgrounds.

“These leaders represent various regional communities with different backgrounds. This shows that the MTQ does not belong solely to the Muslim community, but serves as a space for togetherness for all people in Indonesia,” he said.

Despite the uncertain geopolitical conditions, including ongoing wars, it is hoped that the National MTQ will radiate peace throughout Indonesia and the world.

“This demonstrates that the spirit of the MTQ transcends the competition arena; there is a breath of togetherness, unity, and a ‘spirit’ towards the unity of the Indonesian nation,” he said.

Also present at the opening of the 31st National MTQ were the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Pratikno, and the Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar.

The 31st National MTQ is scheduled to take place from 11–20 September 2021, with competitions held across 12 arenas throughout the city of Semarang.

A total of 2,242 participants have been registered for the 31st National MTQ, consisting of 1,751 main participants and 491 reserves.

They will compete in eight branches and 24 competition groups across 48 categories, with the committee having prepared 5,257 examination items.
