Central Java DPRD Forms Special Committee for South Brebes New Autonomous Region Proposal
The Central Java Provincial DPRD has formed a special committee (pansus) to examine the fulfilment of requirements for the establishment of the proposed South Brebes new autonomous region (CDOB). The proponents of the regional expansion had previously passed the procedural stages at the Brebes Regency DPRD.
Central Java DPRD Chairman, Sumanto, stated that the requirements for regional expansion are regulated under Law Number 23 of 2014 on Regional Government. In the context of forming the South Brebes CDOB, Sumanto added, his party must check whether the requirements according to the law have been met before it is submitted to the central government.
“So today we form a special committee to determine whether it has met the requirements or not,” Sumanto said after chairing a Central Java DPRD plenary meeting on Thursday (30/7/2026). Sumanto revealed that the Central Java DPRD will implement the mechanism related to regional expansion in accordance with established rules. The final decision, however, is the authority of the central government.
Meanwhile, Central Java Provincial Secretary Sumarno disclosed that his party has followed up on the aspirations regarding the formation of the South Brebes CDOB. According to him, the process has passed the stages at the Brebes Regency Government and the Brebes DPRD.
“And this has been conveyed to us, the Central Java Provincial Government. Our colleagues are also in the process of reviewing whether the initial requirements have been met. According to our study, they have met the requirements, so we, the Governor, are submitting it to our DPRD colleagues for discussion, and ultimately it will be a joint agreement between the DPRD and the Governor,” Sumarno stated.
He said that once a joint agreement is reached, it will be submitted to the central government. “After it is proposed to the centre, the central government will act; there will be an independent team and so on,” he said. Sumarno explained that one of the main reasons behind the proposal for the expansion and formation of the South Brebes CDOB is the accessibility of public services. “If we look at South Brebes, perhaps from an administrative perspective, it is visibly quite far from the government centre in Brebes,” he said.
Chairman of the South Brebes Expansion Presidium, Agus Sutrisno, welcomed the formation of the special committee by the Central Java DPRD. He expressed hope that the establishment of the new autonomous region could be carried out as soon as possible. “We have been fighting since 1957. Hopefully, it can be done as soon as possible,” Agus said.
