Central Jakarta to Hold Rowing Competition for Independence Day

The Central Jakarta administration, through its Youth and Sports Sub-agency, will hold a rowing competition in the Pasar Baru area on 29-30 August 2026 as part of the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia celebrations.

Head of the Central Jakarta Youth and Sports Sub-agency, Hendra Eka Permana, said the event was prepared to preserve a sporting activity that has developed in Central Jakarta while also enlivening the independence celebrations by involving the community.

“We want to preserve a culture that has been ongoing in Central Jakarta and, alhamdulillah, we have succeeded in collaborating with the sports organisation under the auspices of the DKI Jakarta Youth and Sports Agency,” Hendra said during a Regional Coordination Meeting at the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office on Tuesday.

Registration for participants is open from 14 to 25 August 2026, followed by participant verification on 26 August and a technical meeting on 27 August. Registration is conducted in person at the Central Jakarta Youth and Sports Sub-agency office with the required documents specified by the committee.

The competition will be held over two days, 29-30 August. Hendra explained that the first day is allocated to allow participants to adapt to the competition venue, while the main event will take place on 30 August.

“This is to give all participants the opportunity to adjust to the competition site, because the medium is water and safety aspects must be considered,” he said.

Hendra further revealed that participants are divided into three groups: students, the general public, and representatives of agencies or regional work units within the Central Jakarta administration. Each group is required to include both male and female participants so that the competition is not dominated by men.

The boats used are rubber boats, similar to the previous year’s event, with a capacity of six people. To support participant safety, the Central Jakarta Youth and Sports Sub-agency has coordinated with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Regional Disaster Management Agency to prepare boats and oars.

The committee has also prepared prizes for the top three winners. First place will receive Rp4 million, second place Rp3.5 million, and third place Rp3 million.

Hendra expressed hope that the rowing competition would not merely be an entertainment event to commemorate Independence Day, but also a means to strengthen community interaction and maintain the continuity of sporting activities that have developed in Central Jakarta.

“This is a moment that may perhaps be utilised for the series of independence day commemorations in Central Jakarta,” he said.
