Central Jakarta SDA Accelerates Five Drainage Normalisation Projects in Tanah Abang

The Water Resources (SDA) Implementation Unit for Tanah Abang District, Central Jakarta, is continuing work on five drainage normalisation projects across several sub-districts to increase drainage capacity and reduce the potential for standing water.

Head of the Tanah Abang District SDA Implementation Unit, Eli Menawan Sari, stated that the five projects are spread across the sub-districts of Karet Tengsin, Gelora, Bendungan Hilir, and Kebon Kacang, with varying progress levels.

"All of them are a priority. We must carry out the proposals submitted by residents through the development planning forum (musrenbang) and the sub-district heads," Eli said when contacted in Jakarta on Monday.

Eli explained that the project with the fastest progress is located on Jalan Danau Singkarak RT 13/RW 03, Bendungan Hilir Sub-district, which has reached 64 percent of the total 90-metre channel length.

Meanwhile, the drainage normalisation on Jalan Kebon Kacang 2 RT 05/RW 02, Kebon Kacang Sub-district, spanning 100 metres, has reached 40 percent progress, followed by the left side of Jalan Karet Pasar Baru Barat RT 06/RW 06, Karet Tengsin Sub-district, spanning 125 metres, with 39 percent progress.

Work on Jalan Palmerah Utara RT 03/RW 01, Gelora Sub-district, has reached 35 percent, while the drainage normalisation on Jalan Danau Jempang RT 07/RW 04, Bendungan Hilir Sub-district, spanning 200 metres, is still at 17 percent progress.

Eli conveyed that the normalisation is being carried out on channels that have suffered quite severe damage by replacing the old construction with u-ditch concrete measuring 40x40x120 centimetres.

According to him, the work is expected to improve the function of the channels in draining water while also smoothing the drainage system in the Tanah Abang area.

"We will carry out drainage normalisation work in areas prone to standing water," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Central Jakarta City SDA Sub-Department, Adrian Mara Maulana, stated that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continues to undertake various flood mitigation efforts by running river normalisation programmes and channel repairs.

This normalisation programme includes widening channels or rivers, arranging riverbanks, and sustainable environmental management.

"The SDA Sub-Department is responsible for ensuring the provision of sustainable water resources, managing water-related infrastructure, and supporting the achievement of efficient spatial planning," he said.
