Central Jakarta ramps up waste-sorting outreach
In Jakarta (ANTARA) - Suku Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (LH) Kota Administrasi Jakarta Pusat, has again conducted socialisation of restrictions on waste disposal to the Bantargebang Transfer Station (TPST Bantargebang), by inviting residents to sort waste from the source to address the capital’s problems. ‘In the initial phase, August 2026 will see a 50 percent reduction and by 2027 there will be 100 percent no waste disposal to TPST Bantargebang. Therefore, we are ramping up waste separation at source,’ said Slamet Riyadi, head of the Suku Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (Sudin LH) of Central Jakarta in Jakarta, on Tuesday. According to him, the restriction on waste disposal to TPST Bantargebang is in line with Governor of DKI Jakarta Regulation Number 5 of 2026. Slamet also cited that Kecamatan Johar Baru, Central Jakarta, contributes 50-70 tons of waste to TPST Bantargebang; it is hoped that with the waste-sorting activities this can reduce the waste entering TPST Bantargebang. He explained that from the data available there are 44 waste banks in Johar Baru and they are able to reduce waste by nearly 2 tons. ‘If we further increase the number of waste banks in the community, this waste problem will be resolved soon,’ he said. Meanwhile, the Head of City Planning and Environmental Management (Kabag PKLH) Setko Administrasi Jakarta Pusat, Martua Sitorus, called on all elements of society to cooperate in tackling Jakarta’s waste problem, especially in Central Jakarta. ‘Because if only the government is trying, it will not be possible to finish this problem. Therefore, there needs to be cooperation from all elements of society,’ he said. Martua added that the Central Jakarta City Government will also engage the Education Office, Health Office, and UMKM to carry out waste sorting. ‘In the mayor’s instruction, the Education Office JP I and II, health centres (puskesmas), and UMKM because they generate a substantial amount of waste,’ he said.
