Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Central Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) has distributed 4,000 face masks to residents across 44 kelurahan in anticipation of exposure to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.

“Today we are handing out 4,000 masks to the public. The distribution is spread across the whole of Central Jakarta by our officers,” said the Head of the Central Jakarta Satpol PP, Purnama Hasudungan Panggabean, in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the masks were being distributed simultaneously across the whole of Central Jakarta, particularly in locations that serve as centres of activity and mobility, including the Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout, markets, railway stations, residential areas and a number of main roads.

According to him, the mask distribution reflects the Satpol PP’s concern for residents who continue to carry out activities outdoors amid the potential exposure to volcanic ash.

“We urge the public to remain calm but vigilant about the effects of volcanic ash. Use a mask when active outside the home and follow the instructions of officers to protect your health,” said Purnama.

Residents were also asked not to readily believe or spread unverified information.

“Do not be easily taken in by misleading information. If you receive information in the community, check it first through official government websites, which are more accurate,” said Purnama.

Meanwhile, one resident, Anto Sudrajat (45), said he had experienced irritation to his breathing and eyes following the arrival of the volcanic ash.

He welcomed the mask distribution carried out by the officers.

“Normally when I ride a motorbike my eyes don’t hurt, and I keep my helmet visor closed. But since the ash from Anak Krakatau arrived, my eyes have become a bit sore,” said Anto.
