Central Jakarta Mayor Urges Harapan Mulia Residents to Sort Waste from Home

The Central Jakarta City Government is urging residents of Harapan Mulia to start sorting organic and inorganic waste from home as an effort to reduce the volume of waste sent to final disposal sites. Central Jakarta Mayor Arifin made the appeal during a gathering with residents at the RW 02 Multifunction Field in Harapan Mulia on Tuesday evening. “I ask Harapan Mulia residents to actively sort waste from home. Organic food waste can be processed into fertiliser and so on, while plastic bottles can be collected for recycling,” Arifin said in a written statement on Wednesday. He stated that sorting waste at the source is a crucial step to lessen the burden of waste management in Jakarta. Furthermore, sorted waste has the potential to provide economic benefits if managed or recycled. Arifin noted that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will begin gradually reducing the volume of waste sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant starting 1 August. During the event, Arifin and Central Jakarta administrative officials also listened to various aspirations and issues raised by Harapan Mulia residents. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, through Governor’s Instruction Number 5 of 2026 concerning the Waste Sorting and Processing from Source Movement, continues to encourage these efforts. DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung called on the public to make waste sorting from home a habit so that the amount of waste taken to the Bantargebang plant can be continuously reduced, while increasing the reuse of materials through recycling and organic waste processing. Pramono Anung stressed that proper waste management must start from individual homes and neighbourhoods and be carried out sustainably.
