Central Jakarta administration ready to implement one-year compulsory preschool education
The Central Jakarta city administration is ready to support the 13-year compulsory education programme through a requirement for children aged 5-6 to attend one year of preschool education.
Central Jakarta Assistant for Administration and People’s Welfare Nurhidayat said the effort is being realised through the issuance of Central Jakarta Mayor Instruction Number E-0050 of 2026.
“Following up on this policy, a Mayor Instruction has been issued. This year marks the initial implementation, with the target that all eight sub-districts across Central Jakarta have a clear implementation roadmap,” Nurhidayat said in a written statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Nurhidayat said the programme is a national mandate and a policy of Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung to ensure preschool-aged children receive education as an initial stage before entering primary school.
He said socialisation will be carried out to align perceptions and strengthen the commitment of all parties so that every child in Central Jakarta receives quality preschool education.
“One year of compulsory preschool education is the foundation for building superior human resources ready to welcome Golden Indonesia 2045,” he said.
Nurhidayat stressed that the programme’s success cannot rely solely on the government but requires the participation of the community and all stakeholders.
Therefore, the Central Jakarta city administration is inviting regional apparatus organisations, Bunda PAUD, village heads, sub-district heads, preschool teacher organisations, and community elements to become programme drivers in the field.
“Let us together realise Central Jakarta as an area free from school dropouts and become an example in the implementation of 13-year compulsory education,” he said.
He added that based on available data, some residents in the eight sub-districts of Central Jakarta have already enrolled their four-year-old children in early childhood education (PAUD).
In addition to attending PAUD, some parents also provide preschool activities for their children through reading tutoring as preparation for entering formal education.
