Central Government Approves Riprap Construction in Bintaro, Mataram, to Begin Early 2027

Bintaro sub-district in Ampenan, Mataram, is the sole location approved for the installation of a riprap breakwater, with construction slated to begin in early 2027. The project aims to mitigate increasingly severe abrasion along Ampenan Beach.

Lale Widiahning, Head of the Mataram Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), stated that certainty over the Bintaro riprap construction has strengthened after the central government gave a positive signal regarding the proposal. “Of the four proposed sites, only Bintaro has been approved,” Lale explained on Monday (13/7/2026).

Lale added that the Mataram City Government has been asked to complete several administrative requirements, including the Environmental Management Efforts (UKL) and Environmental Monitoring Efforts (UPL), as prerequisites for the project. In addition to the UKL-UPL, the PUPR Agency is also preparing various technical data. If all requirements are completed on schedule, the project stands a strong chance of being realised soon.

“There is already a 90 per cent hope because we are currently completing all the requirements requested by the central government. Hopefully, all documents will be finished by August 2026,” Lale said.

Lale is optimistic that the riprap construction project on the Bintaro coast can enter the construction phase in early 2027 if the entire administrative process is completed. The initial phase of the riprap installation will span 500 metres, with a proposed budget of approximately Rp 60 billion sourced from the State Budget (APBN).

Previously, Mataram Mayor Mohan Roliskana expressed hope that the central government would provide budgetary support for the riprap construction. According to Mohan, the total estimated budget requirement reaches Rp 145 billion. “Indeed, this riprap requires intervention from the ministry. At least the NTB Provincial Government can affirm what has become our hope,” Mohan stated.

Meanwhile, the Nusa Tenggara I River Basin Office (BWS) had also previously proposed a budget for handling abrasion at several vulnerable points in Mataram. The total proposed budget reached Rp 250 billion, exceeding the Mataram City Government’s proposal.
