Centenary of Jam Gadang marks milestone for strengthening Indonesia-Netherlands relations
The centenary of Jam Gadang also represents the long journey of transformation in Indonesia-Netherlands relations from colonial times to a better friendship and partnership.
PADANG (ANTARA) - West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi stated that the 100th anniversary of Jam Gadang in Bukittinggi in June 2026 will be a milestone to reflect on Indonesia-Netherlands relations towards a stronger partnership.
“The centenary of Jam Gadang also represents the long journey of transformation in Indonesia-Netherlands relations from colonial times to a better friendship and partnership,” Mahyeldi said in Bukittinggi on Saturday.
He said Jam Gadang is not only an icon of Bukittinggi city but also a historical symbol and source of pride for West Sumatrans, holding significant value in the nation’s journey.
“The centenary must serve as a space for historical reflection and strengthened collaboration to bring educational, cultural, and regional promotional activities,” he added.
Jam Gadang, a gift from Queen Wilhelmina in 1926, still stands at the centre of Bukittinggi. The historic building is 27 metres tall with a distinctive Minangkabau-style roof.
Mahyeldi said the centenary should be marked through educational and cultural activities, as well as national and international events to strengthen Minangkabau cultural image.
According to Ramlan, various events have been planned to commemorate the occasion, including an international seminar, Minangkabau Literacy Festival 2026, Jam Gadang Cultural Night, Bukittinggi East Film Festival, Jam Gadang Fun Run, and traditional cuisine festival.
Bukittinggi City Government hopes the centenary will receive support from various parties to positively impact tourism, the economy, and the community.
