Cengkareng motorcycle theft gang arrested after falsely accusing victims of sibling assault
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Three men stole motorcycles using a modus operandi of accusing victims of assaulting their siblings on Daan Mogot Road in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on Sunday, 10 May 2026.
Motorcycle thieves with the initials C, CH, and A have been arrested by police.
‘Today we have uncovered a motorcycle theft case in Cengkareng. There are three suspects involved, with the initials C, CH, and A,’ said Cengkareng Police Station’s Investigation Unit Chief, AKP Parman Gultom, to reporters at the Cengkareng Police Station on Saturday, 30 May 2026.
‘The sequence of events was that they followed the victim from behind. After overtaking, they accused the victim, saying, “You assaulted my sibling earlier?” causing the victim to be confused,’ Gultom explained.
The gang intentionally intimidated the victim to cause panic and distress.
After successfully forcing the victim to pull over, the suspects assaulted them and stole their phone, bag, and motorcycle.
‘That’s how it goes – in slang terms, it’s called “diburung-burungin”. It means surrounding the victim, then taking the motorcycle. After the motorcycle was taken, the victim was also assaulted and their phone stolen,’ Gultom said.
According to the incident report, the victim stated they were pushed to the ground and beaten with bare hands and stones.
‘They did not use sharp weapons, but any available objects such as stones were used to assault the victim,’ he added.
‘This has happened multiple times in Cengkareng, along Daan Mogot Road near the Samsat office, at least twice so far, and more cases are expected to be uncovered in future. The modus operandi is the same – “diburung-burungin”,’ he explained.
According to investigators, the proceeds from the stolen motorcycles were used by the suspects for online gambling.
‘After tracing, we found they used the money for frivolous spending and online gambling,’ he said.
Of the three suspects arrested, the one with the initial C is a repeat offender who has been jailed twice for similar offences.
‘There is one repeat offender – the one with initial C. He has committed the same crime multiple times,’ Gultom stated.
Gultom also confirmed that the police are continuing to develop the case to track down remaining stolen vehicles sold by the suspects.
