Cement factories told to go green
BOGOR: Cement producers PT Semen Cibinong and PT Indocement
Tbk were ordered to undergo environmental audits and to construct
green areas in a bid to minimize the adverse impacts of pollution
resulting from their operations.
Member of Bogor Council's Commission D on environment, Darwin,
explained that the two factories were located in residential
areas; Klapa Nunggal and Citeureup districts, respectively.
"I hope by establishing green areas around the factories, the
environment will be safe ... the effects will be seen after 10 or
15 years. I hope other companies will follow them by protecting
the environment too," he said on Thursday.
Darwin, a proponent of environmental causes, also urged the
Bogor administration to draw a regulation requiring all such
industrial plants to set up green areas as "compensation" for the
pollution they create.
"These things can also be considered part of the companies'
community development programs," he added. -- JP
