Celebrating World Environment Day, Hundreds of Sea Almond and Coconut Trees Planted on Merak Island
PT Indo Raya Tenaga (IRT) together with PT Indonesia Power Renewables carried out a tree planting activity on Pulau Merak Kecil, Cilegon, Banten. This initiative was undertaken to commemorate World Environment Day 2026. The event, themed ‘Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future’, was held by the two companies in collaboration with the Anak Pulo Community, a group actively managing the Pulau Merak Kecil area. This action represents a manifestation of the companies’ commitment to the sustainability and preservation of the surrounding environment.
Deputy General Manager of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) at PT IRT, Kardi bin Kasiran, stated that Pulau Merak Kecil is a tourist destination in the Cilegon region that must be maintained and developed. Kardi added that this activity is based on the spirit of industry players to continue protecting nature so that it remains sustainable. ‘We can build power plants, we can build anything, buildings, but we must remain in harmony with nature,’ he said in Cilegon at the weekend (13/06).
Pulomerak Sub-district Head Hoero Sanjaya also expressed his appreciation. According to him, Pulau Merak Kecil has experienced abrasion in recent years, making this tree planting a positive step to prevent it. ‘On behalf of the Pulomerak government, we express our appreciation and gratitude to PT IRT and also PLN Renewables, who have carried out the planting of Sea Almond trees on Pulau Merak Kecil. This proves the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, because this environment is a heritage that we must protect together,’ Hoero stated.
The World Environment Day celebration was realised by planting dozens of sea almond and coconut tree seedlings. The event, held on Thursday (11/06), was attended directly by Pulomerak Sub-district Head Hoero Sanjaya, Pulomerak Police Chief Kompol D.P. Ambarita, and Finance Director of PLN Indonesia Power Renewables, Laila Haerani.
‘There is a positive side to tourism on Pulau Merak Kecil, but there is also a negative side, namely that we must not let tourism damage this environment. In accordance with this year’s World Environment Day theme, inspired by nature, this nature must be cared for, because nature is life not only for us, but also for our children and grandchildren,’ Kardi said in his speech.
In addition to planting sea almond and coconut trees, PT IRT and PT IP Renewables also held a litter clean-up action around Pulau Merak Kecil. ‘We feel happy and proud to be involved in the commemoration of World Environment Day with IRT. PLN IP Renewables will always support activities like this because we believe that closeness with the community around the Jawa 9&10 power plant is an inseparable part of our responsibility as a company,’ said Finance Director of PLN IP Renewables, Laila Haerani.
PT IRT also provided assistance in the form of a water pump machine to the Anak Pulo Community, which was received directly by the Head of the Anak Pulo Community, Dickzy Eka Putranto. He said the assistance was very useful for supplying clean water around Pulau Merak Kecil. ‘Thank you to the ladies and gentlemen from IRT for implementing this activity. In the future, if there are similar environmental care events, we are ready to help. Thank you for the assistance provided, it is very beneficial, and this clean water pump will be used to distribute clean water to our musholla here,’ Dickzy stated.
