The Riau Regional Police (Polda Riau) celebrated Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah in a unique way. Rather than distributing Eid bonuses, they engaged in tree charity as a commitment to preserving the environment.

The activity took place after Eid prayers at the Mapolda Riau in Pekanbaru City on Saturday (21/3/2026). Eid al-Fitr prayers were held at the Al-Adzim Mosque of Mapolda Riau, attended by Riau Police Chief Inspector General Herry Heryawan, all main officials (PJU) of Polda Riau, their ranks, and the public.

Following the Eid sermon, the Riau Police Chief, accompanied by Deputy Police Chief Brigadier General Hengki Haryadi and main officials, proceeded to the Mapolda field. In the event titled ‘Ecological Charity’, the Police Chief handed out hundreds of Eid tree (THR) saplings to the community to support greening programmes and maintain environmental sustainability in the Riau region.

The distribution of these saplings symbolises the Indonesian National Police’s (Polri) concern for climate change issues, while encouraging the public to actively plant trees in their respective living environments. The types of saplings distributed vary, from fruit trees to shade trees, which are expected to provide economic and ecological benefits to residents in the future.

In his speech, Riau Police Chief Inspector General Herry Heryawan stated that on this Eid al-Fitr occasion coinciding with World Forestry Day, Polda Riau wishes to give something valuable not only to the community but also to nature that has provided goodness. Tree charity represents a strong commitment from Polda Riau in efforts to protect and preserve nature to keep it green.

Inspector General Herry Heryawan also mentioned that this activity follows the instructions of National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo for all Polri members to show empathy to communities affected by natural disasters through one social activity during Eid al-Fitr.

“The social activity we are filling is providing ecological charity or tree charity,” said Inspector General Herry.

This two-star general views tree planting as essential for maintaining environmental sustainability in the future. In addition to conducting education and socialisation, Polda Riau and its ranks also carry out rehabilitation and restoration of forests and their ecosystems.

“The hope is that from this single tree, it produces goodness, not only to fellow humans but also to the surrounding environment and nature,” he said.

The 1996 Police Academy graduate, affectionately called Herimen, also hopes that environmental conservation efforts through the implementation of the Green Policing concept by Polda Riau will benefit the future of the Land of the Yellow Earth, while preserving the world’s lungs to continue providing oxygen for the community.
