Ceasefire Collapses! Israel Attacks Lebanon, Missiles Hit Beirut
The Israeli military launched airstrikes hitting the southern outskirts of Beirut on Sunday, (07/0 đoạn/2026), successfully striking two apartments in separate buildings. This follows claims by the military that it successfully intercepted two projectiles fired by Hezbollah into Israeli territory.
According to Arab News, while Israel and Hezbollah are routinely engaged in exchanges of fire, the southern region of the capital—including districts known as strongholds for the Iran-backed group—has previously been relatively untouched by conflict, with only two recorded strikes since mid-April.
Following the airstrikes in Beirut, the Israeli military immediately issued mass evacuation orders for much of the city of Tyre in southern Lebanon and surrounding areas, a location that has frequently been targeted by aerial attacks.
The Office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued an official statement justifying the recent strikes in the densely populated area. “In accordance with the directives of Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defence Minister Katz, the Israel Defence Forces have just attacked a militant command centre in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut, in response to Hezbollah’s firing into Israeli territory,” the statement from Netanyahu’s office read.
Authorities from the official Lebanese news agency also verified the locations of destruction caused by the aerial bombs dropped by Israeli fighter jets. “The attack targeted two apartments in two buildings,” stated the official report from the Lebanese government-owned National News Agency (NNA).
An AFP photographer observed severe damage to two apartments within a building located on a narrow street, alongside heavy traffic congestion as local residents attempted to flee the outskirts as the Lebanese Army began deploying to the area.
Earlier this week in Washington, envoys from Lebanon and Israel had been promoting a conditional ceasefire plan. This plan would have required Hezbollah to cease all firing, withdraw its forces from near the Israeli border, and allow the Lebanese Army to be deployed into a new “pilot zone” in the region to exercise full exclusive control.
However, Hezbollah has firmly rejected the peace proposal, demanding a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from all Lebanese territory. Meanwhile, Israel has issued stern warnings that it would strike the southern outskirts of Beirut should Hezbollah dare to attack northern Israel.
Air raid sirens sounded loudly in northern Israel on Sunday morning, where the military stated that two projectiles passing from Lebanon into Israeli territory were intercepted. The military subsequently issued a follow-up statement regarding their rapid retaliatory action against the militants’ weaponry infrastructure, stating they had “destroyed the launcher used by Hezbollah terrorists to carry out the attack.”
As of the time of publication, there has been no official comment or statement from the Iran-backed group, although they had claimed earlier in the day to have conducted several separate attacks specifically targeting Israeli military forces within Lebanon.
The ceasefire agreement, intended to end the bloody fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, has been in effect since 17 April, but the peace deal has never been fully respected by either side on the ground. Hezbollah and Israel continue to exchange accusations regarding ceasefire violations, with each side justifying their military actions as retaliation for alleged breaches by the opponent. Israel continues its intensive bombing of its northern neighbour despite the ceasefire status, and the NNA has reported a series of lethal Israeli military strikes across southern Lebanon. Sunday’s attacks erupted just one day after at least five people were reported killed in Israeli airstrikes, including personnel from the Lebanese Army, one of whom was a general.
