CCTV Integration in Jakarta to be Equipped with Supporting Technology

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Komjen Pol Asep Edi Suheri, has confirmed that the integration of CCTV cameras in Jakarta into a single surveillance system will be equipped with supporting technology, specifically to assist in investigations and inquiries. Speaking after the signing of a memorandum of understanding at Jakarta City Hall on Monday, Asep stated that while the specific technical details of the technology remain confidential, the system will significantly aid police in accelerating responses to security disturbances and traffic congestion.

Asep also revealed that the Jakarta Metropolitan Police are currently mapping crime-prone areas to strengthen field patrols and surveillance. Meanwhile, the Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo, explained that access to the CCTV dashboard will not be open to the general public due to public privacy concerns. He noted that access will be restricted to the Jakarta Provincial Government, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, and the Head of the Intelligence and Security Agency (Kabaintablekam).

Approximately 24,000 CCTV cameras across Jakarta are slated for integration into this unified system. These cameras originate from various sources, including Regional-Owned Enterprises (BUMD), regional government agencies (OPD), traffic facilities managed by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, and high-rise buildings exceeding four storeys. Surveillance from strategic locations, such as the MRT, LRT, and Transjakarta, will also be linked to the integrated system. This integration is expected to expand surveillance coverage and strengthen the ‘Jaga Jakarta’ (Protect Jakarta) programme, which is conducted in collaboration with the Jakarta Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda).
