Tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate. The US has reaffirmed its readiness to launch military operations against Iran should ongoing diplomatic efforts fail to yield an agreement. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that American military capabilities remain at high readiness to address potential scenarios in the Middle East. This was reiterated as negotiators from Washington and Tehran attempt to bridge fundamental differences preventing a deal. ‘Our ability to resume if necessary… we are more than capable,’ Hegseth said in Singapore, Reuters reported on Sunday (31 May 2026). He added that US ammunition and combat strength are sufficient to support military operations if required. ‘Our supplies are more than adequate for this, both in the region and globally, so we are in a strong position,’ he added. Despite the conflict with Iran, Hegseth stressed that the US is not reducing its strategic focus on the Indo-Pacific region. He noted the US government is accelerating defence industry production to boost weapons capacity and ensure all military operational needs are met. ‘We can do two things at once. We are strengthening our defence industrial base to produce ammunition two, three, even four times faster, ensuring all our global operations are well-funded,’ he said. The Pentagon chief stated that President Donald Trump is being patient and aims to secure a major agreement ensuring Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons. Earlier this weekend, Trump said he would hold a meeting in a secure room at the White House to make a final decision on proposals to end the Iran conflict. The move is expected to provide additional time for both sides to negotiate a permanent resolution. It is worth noting that the war launched by the US and Israel on 28 February has killed thousands, mainly in Iran and Lebanon, and caused global economic hardship due to soaring energy prices after Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz.
