Jakarta — Andrie Yunus, Vice Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), suffered chemical burns after being allegedly doused with caustic liquid by two unidentified individuals on the evening of 12 March 2026.

The Head of Criminal Investigation at Jakarta Central Police District, AKBP Roby Heri Saputra, stated that the victim sustained burns to his right eye, chest, and right and left wrists.

“The victim is currently recovering and receiving treatment at hospital. We have not yet taken a statement from the victim because he is still unwell,” Roby said when contacted by journalists on 13 March 2026.

One perpetrator acted as the driver whilst the other sprayed the liquid towards the victim.

“We are conducting an investigation to identify both the perpetrators and the vehicle involved,” Roby said.

He explained that Jakarta Central Police District, together with the Metro Jaya Police Regional Directorate of Criminal Investigation, are carrying out investigations using scientific investigation methods to uncover the perpetrators and the motive behind the act.

Earlier, Dimas Bagus Arya, Coordinator of KontraS’s Working Body, stated that residents immediately approached Andrie Yunus following the incident.

“The caustic liquid struck the right side of the victim’s body, particularly his eye, face, chest and hands, causing the victim to scream and fall from his motorcycle,” said Dimas during a press conference at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Friday.

According to Dimas, residents and motorists in the vicinity quickly gathered and assisted the victim.

He also revealed that Andrie’s clothing melted after being exposed to the liquid, prompting the victim to remove it immediately.

“Meanwhile, the suspected perpetrator quickly fled towards Salemba I in the direction of Jalan Salemba Raya,” said Dimas.

While fleeing, the suspected perpetrator also dropped a stainless steel glass, believed to have been used to carry the liquid.

Following the incident, Andrie travelled to his rented accommodation in the Menteng area via back roads.
