Causes of Bantargebang Waste Mound Landslide That Killed Four People

A landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Centre (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java has resulted in four deaths. The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) revealed that the landslide was caused by heavy rainfall with extended duration.

The head of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency, Isnawa Adji, disclosed that the incident occurred at approximately 14:30 on Sunday, 8 March 2026. At the time, waste lorries were queuing to unload waste, when the waste mound suddenly collapsed, striking the lorries and a roadside food stall.

“Whilst waste lorries were queuing to unload their waste, a sudden landslide occurred which struck five waste lorries and one food stall near the location,” said Isnawa Adji, cited by Antara, on Monday, 9 March 2026.

To date, four people have been confirmed dead and two survivors have been rescued as a result of the incident. Based on preliminary estimates, approximately ten people were buried by the landslide, comprising five civilians and five waste lorry drivers.

“Four people have been evacuated deceased and two people have been rescued alive,” said Isnawa.

A combined search and rescue team is currently conducting rescue operations using 20 excavators to locate victims believed to be buried by the landslide.

Authorities continue to catalogue casualties and many waste lorries and food stalls remain buried at the site.
