Cause of Sudden Escalator Reversal at Duri Station: Drive System Malfunction
KAI Commuter (KCI) has revealed the cause of the escalator malfunction that occurred at Duri Station, West Jakarta, yesterday. The disruption was caused by a discovered issue within the facility’s drive system.
“To repair the malfunctioning escalator, KAI Commuter, KAI, and our partners have jointly conducted an inspection. A fault was found in the drive system,” said the VP Corporate Secretary of KAI Commuter, Karina Amanda, on Sunday (4/10/2026).
At present, repairs are still being carried out by the relevant technical teams. Once the repair process is complete, officers will conduct a feasibility test.
“Moving forward, intensive repairs will be conducted by the technical team to ensure the escalator can function properly, and a feasibility test will also be performed as a safety measure,” she stated.
She added that while the escalator repair process is underway, passengers may use manual stairs or the lift located behind the prayer room, which is specifically designated for priority passengers.
“We apologise for this inconvenience. We will carry out the repairs as quickly as possible while continuing to prioritise the safety and security of users when using the escalator,” she said.
Meanwhile, the malfunctioning escalator remains covered with a black tarp. Officers are on standby near the location to direct passengers heading towards Platform 5 towards Tangerang.
