Cattle fattening operations in West Jakarta urged to implement biodigesters

Jakarta — West Jakarta’s Environmental Health Sub-office (Sudin LH) has urged cattle fattening operations in the area to prioritise environmental permits and implement biodigesters for waste management.

“We encourage cattle fattening business operators to install biodigesters so that cattle manure waste is properly managed,” said Ahmad Hariadi, head of the West Jakarta Environmental Health Sub-office, when contacted in Jakarta on Friday.

A biodigester is an airtight (anaerobic) system or tank used to process organic waste, including animal manure, food scraps, and agricultural waste. The process yields two valuable products: biogas (cooking fuel and electricity) and liquid or solid fertiliser.

Hariadi emphasised the importance of managing cattle manure to prevent environmental damage. “Cattle fattening operations can continue, but they must consider environmental aspects and the comfort of surrounding communities,” said Hariadi.

The authorities plan to inspect cattle fattening operations in RT 10 RW 11, Pegadungan Village, Kalideres District, West Jakarta, in the near future. “The Pollution Control and Environmental Damage section of the Environmental Health Sub-office will provide further guidance on wastewater management and the necessary permits,” he added.

Similarly, Tanti, head of the Livestock and Animal Health section at the West Jakarta Food Security, Marine and Agricultural Sub-office (KPKP), said her department will inspect the health condition of livestock. The inspection aims to prevent transmission of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

“We will conduct animal health inspections and administer FMD vaccination to livestock. We are also asked to provide advice on proper livestock management practices. However, wastewater treatment installations fall under the purview of the environmental health sub-office,” she said.
