Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has developed a new, slimmer cell component design for high-performance electric vehicles. The design modification aims to reduce battery thickness constraints, allowing manufacturers to design electric sports cars with a lower stance without compromising cabin space. According to a local report by Carnewschina on Wednesday, CATL’s latest innovation comes in the form of a hardware patent that introduces a specialised thinning area beneath the battery terminal cover. The design is claimed to help prevent internal micro short circuits caused by vibrations during vehicle operation. Battery pack thickness has long been a challenge for designers of low-profile electric cars. With this new design, the vertical dimension of the battery can be reduced, enabling the use of a lower chassis without sacrificing interior room. Beyond enhancing vehicle design flexibility, CATL states the approach also serves as a mechanical safety feature. This technology complements CATL’s previous battery safety developments aimed at reducing the risk of thermal runaway at the pack level.
