Manokwari (ANTARA) - The West Papua provincial government facilitated the resolution of the violence case committed by a class XI student against a class X student at SMA Taruna Kasuari Nusantara through a customary mechanism, involving parents from both sides.

The Head of the West Papua Education Office, Barnabas Dowansiba, in Manokwari on Thursday, stated that both parties had met and agreed to a reconciliation prioritising local wisdom values to resolve the issue.

“With the condition that the family of the class XI student, as the perpetrator, will reimburse all medical treatment costs incurred by the family of the class X student,” he said.

He emphasised that the inter-student violence incident in the school environment must not recur in the future, so all students at SMA Taruna Kasuari Nusantara are required to sign a statement of commitment as a joint pledge.

This not only serves as the basis for implementing strict sanctions in the form of expulsion from school but also encourages the creation of a safe, comfortable, orderly environment at SMA Taruna Kasuari Nusantara free from all forms of violence.

“If any student violates it, they will be expelled from school. This applies indefinitely, not just for the class XI and class X students,” Barnabas stressed.

Currently, he said, the school has returned 60 class XI students at SMA Taruna Kasuari Nusantara who committed the violence to their respective parents, imposing sanctions in the form of online learning while awaiting the customary reconciliation process.

The provincial government is also evaluating the management of SMA Taruna Kasuari Nusantara due to several crucial issues found, namely the admission of new students for the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic years exceeding the maximum limit by 100 people.

“The admission of new students for 2025/2026, who are now in class XI, totals 160 people, and for 2026/2027 or class X, there are 140 people,” said Barnabas.
