Case of alleged group assault on an Undip student by dozens of seniors to be settled amicably
Semarang — The case of alleged assault against Arnendo, a 20-year-old student in the Social Anthropology Programme, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at Diponegoro University (Undip), will be settled amicably. Arnendo is accused of being beaten by dozens of his seniors after being accused of sexually harassing a female Undip student.
An agreement to settle the case amicably was reached after the Dean of FIB Undip, Alamsyah, invited legal representatives from both Arnendo’s side and the accused. Alamsyah revealed that the idea to facilitate the meeting came from the Rector of Undip.
“The discussion was very constructive and positive, aimed at finding a resolution mutually beneficial for both sides, and there was an understanding that the two lawyers would settle the campus matter amicably,” Alamsyah said after a meeting held at FIB Undip on Friday (6 March 2026).
He added that they welcomed the parties’ willingness to settle the case amicably, because Undip hopes that both Arnendo and the accused can continue their studies at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences.
“We very much hope they can continue their studies at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences,” said Alamsyah.
Nevertheless, Alamsyah admitted that they had summoned Arnendo to clarify the sexual harassment allegations he is accused of. “Because, after all, we have to cross-check first,” he said.
He added that the sexual harassment allegations by Arnendo are still being investigated by Undip’s Sexual Violence Task Force. The case of the alleged assault against Arnendo is also being investigated by the ethics committee.
“Hopefully, at the next proceedings, both Arnendo and the others, in accordance with the duties of the ethics committee and the task force, will be willing to provide in-depth testimony,” said Alamsyah.
Meanwhile, Arnendo’s counsel, Zainal Petir, said he was willing to resolve the case of violence or assault he experienced through a family-style settlement. “So the Dean (FIB), representing the Rector, hopes that this issue can be settled amicably. We have agreed to pursue a peace settlement and it will be facilitated by Undip,” Zainal said.
Because the case of the alleged assault against Arnendo has been reported to Polrestabes Semarang, Zainal said he was prepared to engage in dialogue with the lawyers for the accused at the police station. “If restorative justice occurs, it could be resolved; we will simply follow the police’s regulations,” Zainal said when asked whether he would withdraw his report at Polrestabes Semarang.
He revealed that although the beating occurred in November 2025, Arnendo, who is currently a fourth-semester student in the Social Anthropology Programme at Undip, remains psychologically traumatised. As a result of the assault, Arnendo suffered a broken nose and a concussion. According to Zainal, about 30 people were involved in the beating.
“The victim desires justice. This sense of justice will be formulated by the defence team for the accused, because he is traumatised and disabled, including a broken nose and concussion,” Zainal said.
Meanwhile Wahyu Rudi Indarto, counsel for the accused, expressed thanks to FIB Undip for initiating the mediation process between his clients and Arnendo’s counsel. “We welcome this and thank you. The spirit of today’s discussions was that we want to resolve this matter amicably,” Wahyu said.
“It seems we share a common vision, but further format details will need to be discussed with our respective clients,” he added.
