Case against Soeharto
Case against Soeharto
From Pelita
President Abdurrahman Wahid's intention to reopen the
investigation of former president Soeharto shows his commitment
to upholding the law transparently. It is apparently a tough case
but it will have a positive impact on law enforcement and
justice. Whether Soeharto will be pardoned is a matter still to
be considered, but it is very likely he will be granted a pardon
based on certain considerations, such as the former president's
many achievements for the country.
I think that a political pardon can be granted through a
consensus of community figures and political elites, with the
approval of the House of Representatives and the People's
Consultative Assembly. The important thing is to enforce the law
to show what is right and what is wrong in order to prevent past
mistakes from recurring in the new government.
I hope that President Wahid will solve the various problems
afflicting the nation to allow the people a chance to escape the
various crises.
No less important is that all sides should be consistent in
the process of enforcing the law.
